言うまでもなくソースを確認するのは「ウソをウソと見抜く」ための鉄則です。米国発のニュースでソースがスーパーマーケット・タブロイドであればちょっと疑ってかかった方がよいでしょう。Wikipediaでは米国のスーパーマーケット・タブロイドとして、Star、Sun、The Globe、The National Enquirer、Weekly World News、The National Examinerが挙げられています。ちなみに、私が知る限りで一番めちゃくちゃなのはWeekly World Newsで「エルビスを火星で発見」とかそういう次元の記事ばかりが載っています（どういう層をターゲットとしているのか、みんなネタとして読んでいるのか、真に受けている人もいるのかよくわかりません）。
